Life was not going well for Eric. Recently, he divorced after years of an unhappy marriage. For a long time, their couple was dysfunctional.
He was a sneaky man, and she was a bully. He would cheat on her all the time and she would make his life hell. She finally left him for someone else.
Which sadden him, because despite his unhealthy relationship, he felt reassured to have someone to go to.
Along these years, he developed other bad habits such as stealing his neighbour’s newspaper or writing rubber checks.
Eric was unemployed and every Wednesday he had to sign up with the job center. This particular Wednesday he drove there. As usual he swore at every bad driver around him leaving him as the only good driver.
He parked, smoked a last cigarette and deliberately arrived five minutes late for his appointment.
There he would complain that life was hard and that he didn’t receive enough money to live normally.
By normally he meant that at the end of each month he did not have enough money to go to William Hill and bet, or simply go to the pub like every normal human being.
But on this particular Wednesday after a good night at the Prince Arms, he sat down in front of his TV and watched the lotto result, the numbers he always played came out on the national lottery.
Finally his luck had turned, he deserved it. He considered himself, the victim of an ungrateful life.
Now, a life of eternal leisure laid in front of him. And the most satisfying thing was, his wife would get nothing.
So he went straight to his cupboard where he kept the ticket, only to realise that on this particular Wednesday, he didn’t play.
