The Cloakroom

Derek was from Polish decent, a second generation living in London. He hated stereotypes but he was a builder, working for and with Polish. Despite all this, he wanted to avoid this sense of community, which is why for the past six years he took salsa classes. He developed a passion for it.  But the macho universe he was evolving in made him keep it as a dear secret.
In what he considered a pretty boring life, he was looking forward to the yearly event “The Macumba Night Contest”.
With this event in mind he was preparing very hard, doubling his lessons on Wednesday night and testing its improvement on Saturdays at the “Tropico Club”.
There he was the king of the dance floor. Everyone working at the club knew him, he had his little habits, first he would get served his virgin cuba libre (since he did not drink alcohol), then would go to his allocated seat in a corner, where he could observe everything that was happening on the dance floor. And then wait for the DJ to play his favourite song while announcing him:
“ And tonight especially for you ladies and gentlemen, the man who is to the Tropico Club what David is to Victoria Beckham, our Everest, the God of Salsa…
DEEEEEEERECKKKKKKKK!!!”

Marcela was a Colombian woman. She was a student who loved traveling. She was close to achieving her master in Sociology. For her final dissertation she chose to study the role of dancing in an individual’s behaviour.
Her friends, who were not numerous, would describe her as the rudest person they knew. But it was more a defense mechanism against male predators and a way to avoid superfluous discussions. She was determined to graduate with the highest honours and would not allow anyone to deviate her from her trajectory.
In order to manage successfully her studies, she would visit a different club every Saturday. For this, she would wear what she considered her spy costume: high heels, a skirt and an inconveniently visible top. Before leaving she would grab a pen and notebook. Next she would go pick up her friend Emily, who helped her deal with the makeup. After visiting Rock, Electro, Jazz, Funk and Disco clubs, it was time to go back to her roots: Latin music. She had her mind set on the “Tropico Club”.

At the “Tropico Club”, Marcela was queuing to leave her jacket, at this moment a pair of eyes made contact with hers; Derek was going to the bathroom. A looser again she thought. She penetrated the room, sat down and observed.
The DJ promoted the king of the dance floor. Derek took his place and started to do what he did best, while keeping an eye on her.
At this moment mixed feelings inexplicably overwhelmed her, and uncontrollably, she laughed!
It shook Derek’s confidence off. He fell!
If she liked the dance, seeing him vulnerable she loved.
Since, they are inseparable.
